Client Success Story
An E5 Sailor in the Navy, Marcus*, married with two young children, discharged from the military in April of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the family faced significant employment challenges. The Sailor’s wife, Allie*, had to leave work as daycares closed and Marcus was laid off from his new job. Luckily, they were able to gain new employment a few months later, but they had fallen behind on rent. Every day they had to make difficult decisions on how to spend their remaining dollars. Rent or groceries? Utilities or diapers? They came to STEP for help.
STEP assisted the family with a grant of $3,190 to cover two months of past-due rent to avoid a future eviction. A STEP Social Worker counseled with the family to create a personalized financial plan, which included their goals of becoming debt-free and saving $500 per month for emergencies.
Military families and recent Veterans have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. As a privately funded nonprofit organization, your generous contributions ensure we can help these families maintain their basic needs and get on a path to a brighter financial future.

An interview with STEP’s newest partner White Feather Investments CEO Buddy Rushing
During his first combat deployment in Afghanistan, Marine Officer Buddy Rushing, Owner and CEO of White Feather Investments (WFI), found a copy of Rich Dad Poor Dad left in an armored vehicle. This book provided a pivotal moment for Buddy, opening his eyes to the possibility that he could create generational wealth through real estate investments. Growing up poor in Tennessee instilled in him a strong desire to get out of poverty and create financial freedom for his family, but didn’t know how until that day in the Khyber Pass. Now, after over 20 years in uniform, Buddy will leave next month to focus full-time on his next phase in life.
